Machu Picchu circuits explained, which one should you choose?
The circuit system at Machu Picchu confuses most first-time visitors. Since 2024, entry has been divided into fixed routes with daily caps. Here is everything you need to know in plain English.
What is a circuit at Machu Picchu?
Timed entry tickets are tied to specific circuits, fixed walking routes through different parts of the citadel. Each circuit has a daily cap. Once sold out, no more tickets are available for that circuit on that date. You cannot switch circuits once booked.
Classic circuit (Circuit 2A)
The most popular route and the one we recommend for most visitors. Covers the main monument complex, agricultural terraces, the famous sundial and the guard house viewpoint, the iconic postcard image of Machu Picchu. Around 2 hours at a relaxed pace. Sells out 2 to 3 months ahead during peak season (June to November).
Huayna Picchu mountain (Circuit 3A)
The lower citadel ruins plus a challenging climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu, the distinctive peak rising above the citadel in every photo. Steep in places with fixed rope sections. Does not include the classic guard house viewpoint. Outstanding views from the top looking down over the entire citadel. Book at least 4 months ahead.
Machu Picchu mountain (Circuit 1A)
The guard house viewpoint and upper terraces plus a climb to the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain. A longer but less steep climb than Huayna Picchu. Panoramic views across the Valley. Does not include the full citadel walk. A good option when Huayna Picchu is sold out or the climb sounds too intense.

- Want to climb a mountain above the citadel and have no fear of heights? Huayna Picchu.
- Want panoramic views with a less intense climb? Machu Picchu Mountain.
