What Train Time Do I Need for My Machu Picchu Entry?
Your train does not take you directly to the Machu Picchu entrance. It arrives in Machu Picchu Pueblo, where you still need time to walk to the bus stop, wait for the bus and travel up to the entrance.

This allows time to leave the station, walk to the bus stop, join the queue, travel up the mountain and reach the entrance without rushing. It is the best train time to Machu Picchu when you want a comfortable buffer rather than a race against the clock.
This is a conservative planning recommendation, not an official admission rule. Longer buffers may be sensible during busy periods or when traveling on a route with limited alternatives.
Machu Picchu train times: what arrival do I need for my entry?
Do not try to match a train number to your slot. The safe way to read Machu Picchu train times is to work back from your entry: find the latest sensible arrival in Machu Picchu Pueblo, then pick any available train that lands before it.

These are recommended arrival targets rather than specific train services. Train schedules, availability and journey times can change by date and operator. Once you know your entry time, look for an available train that reaches Machu Picchu Pueblo before the recommended arrival time.
Why you cannot match the train directly to your entry time

Can I travel from Ollantaytambo on the same day for an early entry?
For a 6am or 7am entry, staying in Machu Picchu Pueblo the previous night is the safer option. Even the earliest train must first reach Machu Picchu Pueblo. You then still need to leave the station, reach the bus stop, travel up the mountain and arrive at the entrance.
PeruRail's May to December 2026 timetable lists an early train leaving Ollantaytambo at 5:05am and arriving in Machu Picchu Pueblo at 6:37am. That is already too late for a 6:00am entry and leaves too little margin for a 7:00am entry, so staying overnight is the safer option for the earliest slots. Train schedules remain subject to change. Inca Rail describes the trip as generally taking around 1½ to 2 hours depending on the service.
What time should I arrive at Ollantaytambo station?
PeruRail advises passengers to be ready to board 30 minutes before departure at Ollantaytambo station. Build this into your morning plan rather than arriving at the printed departure time. As an example:

What time should I book my return train from Machu Picchu?
The correct return train from Machu Picchu depends on your entry time and route, not only the time you enter. Before you decide what time to leave Machu Picchu, allow for all of this:
Entry time + route duration + time leaving the site + wait for the return bus + bus journey to Machu Picchu Pueblo + walk to the train station + train boarding time.
